Battle Royale' Could Be Getting A Competitive Mode Soon

Fair warning: datamined documents are sometimes reliable indicators of what is coming in a game, such as if we get to observe the Fortnite challenges a few days before or when the skins turn it into the match week or so before they actually hit the store. If there's a full-on skin in the game, by way of example, you can bet it is actually coming. Sometimes datamined documents are somewhat less reliable, and we are discussing the latter right now. Recent sleuthing has discovered a new folder attached to the restricted time manners with "comp" from the title, and many are taking this to mean that Fortnite: Battle Royale is becoming a competitive mode.

Let's think about why Fortnite could use a aggressive manner, to start with. To begin with, it's a ridiculously high skill cap -- that usually means the top of the top players can wipe the floor with folks like myself. That's mostly because of the simple fact that high-level players can easily juggle the construction and shooting mechanisms into a new kind of level-editing shooter that really has never been seen before. Lower-skilled players are mostly playing a normal shooter with the ability to construct ramps. Right now Fortnite doesn't have skill-based matchmaking, that is part of the pleasure: that John Wick on the horizon might be a fool with a lot of free time and/or disposable income, also it might be the most dangerous player you have ever met.

A competitive manner could give those hardcore gamers somewhere to show off in a setting where they'll simply be up against tougher players. Any kind of ranking system would also give a bit more of a bonus for those players to stick about: somebody who's mastered the game could just move on to greener pastures if there is not a new structure in which to prove themselves.

It might also begin laying the groundwork for genuine Fortnite Items esports. Esports with Battle Royale games are a tricky beast because random actions can make things inconsistent, and sports thrive when they're predictable contests that allow player skill carry the day. Fortnite is a much better candidate than PUBG, at least, because the resource demands of the construction system promote conflict and dissuade camping, and camping isn't a pleasure to watch. Fortnite is the biggest game on earth, but it's far from the biggest sport in esports -- it's hard to imagine that Epic is not thinking about how to construct in this way.
