  Pebbles are formed when preexisting rocks are naturally eroded to the surface of the Earth and then drop to the surface of Earth and eventually settle on the surface. Pebbles are typically composed of fragments of igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary rocks that have been worn down through time through exposure to atmosphere and water as well as glaciers; after which they shrink to the granules (2 to 4 millimeter diameter) but larger than cobbles (6-to 64 millimeters in diameter).

  Pebble shapes and sizes vary significantly based on the geological conditions and the rock formation process yet can be found throughout the globe, but are most often associated with sandy beaches and riverbeds. Pebbles are a key element in mitigating coastal erosion while providing habitats for both animals and plants.

  When collecting pebbles, be sure to bring an extra bag, pencil or pen, paper and notepad for recording each specimen along with handheld lenses and possibly even hammers/chisels (for more advanced collectors). Before you embark on your adventure be sure to check the local laws to determine if they are legal before removing pebbles from beaches.
