  • (SportsNetwork.com) - The Winnipeg Jets will try to continue their success under new head coach Paul Maurice when they visit the struggling Washington Capitals for Thursdays meeting at Verizon Center. You catch all of the action live on TSN Jets at 6pm ct. The Jets boast a 9-2-0 record since Maurice took over behind the bench for the fired Claude Noel in mid-January. The club has won its last three games and Winnipeg can post its second four-game winning streak of the Maurice era with another victory tonight. The surge has helped move Winnipeg within two points of a playoff spot in the West. Washington, meanwhile, has damaged its playoff chances in recent weeks, although it does enter Thursdays tilt only three points out of a postseason spot in the East. The Capitals have lost three of their last four games and are just 3-7-3 over their past 13 outings. The Caps, who until this season were in the same division as the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise, have won five straight in this series against their former Southeast Division rivals. That run includes a 5-4 shootout win in Winnipeg on Oct. 22 when Alex Ovechkin recorded two goals and an assist for Washington. The Jets had a three-game winning streak in D.C. snapped when the Capitals posted a 5-3 home win on April 23 of last season. Ovechkin had one goal and an assist in that victory and the Russian sniper has amassed 81 points (40 goals, 41 assists) in 54 career games against the Thrashers/Jets. Winnipeg has won all three of its games during its current winning streak by one-goal margins and each of the victories came in regulation. The Jets picked up their second straight win by a 2-1 score Tuesday in Carolina, as Chris Thorburn scored the winner with 1:03 to play to down the Hurricanes. The winning goal came as Jacob Trouba skated behind the net and came around the left side in an attempt on a wraparound. It missed the goaltender, but came to the right side and Thorburn slammed it in with 63 seconds left. Andrew Ladd had the other goal and Ondrej Pavelec stopped 28 shots for the win. "It wasnt our best game because I dont think we played to our strengths," said Maurice. "But the structure was deep and our defense was good so thats what pulled us through." The Jets have won the first two games of a four-game swing to improve their road record to 14-14-1. Winnipeg will close the trip this Saturday in St. Louis on the final day of NHL action before the league goes on hiatus for the Winter Olympics. The Capitals were shut out 1-0 in their last outing, as they dropped a home decision to the New York Islanders. Andrew MacDonald scored the only goal of the game early in the third period to account for the decisive goal. Michal Neuvirth made 27 saves for the Capitals, who went 0-for-6 on the power play in the loss. "Every point right now is big," said Washington forward Martin Erat. "It doesnt matter if you are playing the Islanders or if you are playing Boston. You have to play the same way all the time, and we have to get the points from every single game." Washington is 1-1-0 on a four-game homestand that will carry the club into the Olympic break. The residency ends with Saturdays tilt against the New Jersey Devils, who are currently tied with the Caps in the East standings. The Capitals. who are 15-10-4 as the host this season, will play Thursday without defenseman Mike Green (concussion) and forwards Mikhail Grabovski (sprained ankle) and Aaron Volpatti (upper body). When the season began forwards Colin Greening and Erik Condra, a pair of seventh-round draft choices from 2005 and 2006, respectively, werent expected to make the breakthrough to regulars in the Senators lineup. However, after a year of much gloom in Ottawa, theyve emerged as bright lights at a time when the club is making plans for its future. "The opportunity that weve gotten is one you didnt expect but youve got to take advantage of it," Condra said Wednesday. Greening and Condra were both recalled from Binghamton of the American Hockey League last month as the exodus of veterans and big contracts began. With the Senators out of the playoff picture, veteran forwards Mike Fisher, Chris Kelly, Jarkko Ruutu and Alex Kovalev were among those offloaded for draft picks as the team decided a rebuild was in order. Add in a season-ending shoulder injury to Peter Regin and chronic back problem thats likely sidelined captain Daniel Alfredsson for the rest of the year and the door was opened for Greening and Condra to step through. The Senators have since shuttled players back and forth from Binghamton, but the youngsters have been mainstays since and are proving they belong at the NHL level. Theyre among the players that had owner Eugene Melnyk stating Tuesday a turnaround in Ottawa may not take as long as initially feared by those whove watched the Senators tumble to the Eastern Conference basement. "Its a great opportunity for a bunch of us young guys," Condra said. "I know theres not going to be as many spots next year as there are right now, but hopefully some of us have put ourselves in a position where they have to take a serious look at us for next year." Condra, a 24-year-old native of Trenton, Mich., was the 211th player selected in the 2006 draft after his freshman season at Notre Dame. He spent three more years with the Fighting Irish before moving on to Binghamton last season. The six-foot, 188-pound right-winger made his NHL debut Feb. 15 against the New York Islanders with an assist and in 14 games, hes recorded four goals, including two game-winners, and two assists. A hard-worker with good hockey sense, hes recently been playing 16-to-18 minutes a night. "Youre so nervous when you come up here for the first time, but getting that shot to play a few games really boosts your confidence," Condra said as the Senators prepared to face the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night. Condra had both goals in a 2-1 win at Newark last week to seriously dent the Devils late-season push for a playoff spot. "I think I fit in well up here just because the players here are smarter, they know where to be more and that helps my game and complements my game," he said.dddddddddddd "Overall, I think we bring energy and were excited. "Were not the 20-year-old kids, inexperienced, immature rookies. Weve gone to college, Im 24 years old and weve been through a little bit more, but were still excited and weve still got that youth and excitement about playing up here." Greening, a 25-year-old from St. Johns, N.L., has played a prominent role since becoming a regular. He skates at left wing on the top line alongside star centre Jason Spezza and fellow call-up Bobby Butler. The Senators selected him 204th overall in 2005 out of Upper Canada College. He played four seasons with Cornell before joining Binghamton in the fall. He made his NHL debut at New Jersey on Feb. 1, then returned Feb. 18 and has been a mainstay since. In 14 games with Ottawa, Greening has two goals and four assists. "Its been a real positive experience and Im fortunate enough to get on a line with Jason Spezza," Greening said. "Hes given me a lot of advice and thats really helpful, especially when youre new on a team." The six-foot-three, 211-pound Greening made a big impression during the Senators annual skills competition last month when he set a team record for fastest skater. Greening then finished second to defenceman Matt Carkner for the teams hardest shot. "Hes a big guy and likes to get in on the forecheck, so I put pucks in his corners a little bit more and let him do the work there," Spezza said. Even Greening has been surprised by his development since realizing in training camp he needed to improve his speed, both with his skates and decision-making. After starting the year on Binghamtons fourth line, hes now on Ottawas first. "To be able to get some games up here was the furthest thing on my mind," he said. "Im really surprised and very happy with how the year has gone. "I had high expectations for myself and when I came to camp, I realized I had a lot to learn. Even when I was down in the AHL, I remember I had a good couple of exhibition games in Newfoundland with Binghamton and I felt, `Oh wow, I think I can be a player down in the AHL. But when I got back to Binghamton and they sent all of the guys down, I was on the fourth line and I realized that, `Wow, theres a lot of skilled guys and theyre down in the AHL. "At that point, I just wanted to make sure I stayed on the Binghamton Senators." NOTES -- Goalie Craig Anderson didnt practise Wednesday and coach Cory Clouston said he may not be able to play Thursday night because of an undisclosed injury . . . The Senators returned defenceman Andre Benoit and centre Jim OBrien to Binghamton on Wednesday.
