The Most Iconic Oscars Dresses Of 2015 Prove That This Trend Sh

  • The 2016 Academy Awards will air on the evening of Feb. 28. If you care at all about red carpet fashion, then this is your time to stay up late and gush over all of the amazing looks. But if you're at all curious about what trends we can expect to see more of in 2016, looking back at last year's Oscars might help.

There were more than a few memorable moments, of course. From Zendaya's gorgeous faux dreadlocks to a lot of stunning ponytails to '90s themedeverything, last year's carpet wasn't one to forget. (Personally, I have my doubts that 2016 could completely overshadow the controversial and completely stunning looks of the year before.)

But there are three looks that I vividly remember a year after the 2015 awards season. And all three follow one trend that we saw time and time again throughout last year. It's a look that I hope repeats itself in 2016, since it's one of my all time favorites. Essentially, it's a step back from minimalist outfits and towards bejeweled, gemstone-encrusted, slightly kitschy gowns that simply scream glamour.

Even though wearing a gemstone gown might sound like like it takes a certain kind of person to pull off, the three women who I remember doing it couldn't be more different to one another. It just goes to show that this glitz and glamour trend is one that should be repeated for any red carpet affair. Here are the ladies who killed it last year.

    1. Jennifer Lopez

I feel like this gown was the most talked about dress in 2015 — from the nude tones to the sleek ponytail that not only emphasized the beauty of the gigantic princess dress, but the beauty of J. Lo herself. The singer showed the world how to pull off gemstones, and it was magnificent. It was just the kind of look that I daydream about wearing to my wedding, if I ever had thousands of dollars to throw towards an Elie Saab dress.

    2. Lupita Nyong'o

Lupita Nyong'o's pearl gown was one that served to show us how to do a precious stone-covered dress in a simple, elegant manner. It was a look so beautiful that the dress was reportedly stolen and attempted to be sold for the price of the pearls. Nyong'o's Oscars look for 2015 proved she's one of the biggest names in red carpet style right now.

    3. Emma Stone

You caught me. I know this is another Elie Saab dress, but I love everything the brand does. J. Lo's iconic gown and this equally precious dress on Emma Stone not only show the versatility of the designer, but the versatility of gemstones. This gorgeous green shade gave me total '20s vibes while highlighting Stone's gorgeous red hair.

These three iconic looks from 2015 show us the versatility of gemstones on dresses. Fingers crossed that our red carpet celebrities get the hint for the 2016 Academy Awards, and indulge in some glitzy glamour for this year's ceremony. Even if they don't, I'm sure there'll be some amazing looks for us to all discuss at work the next day.
