Trailing roses or rambling roses are also termed as climbing roses. They are incapable of supporting themselves and hence have to be supported against some kind of structure like a veranda, fence or garden arch. In recent times trellising are also being used for supporting the climber rose bushes, thus enabling you to grow them anywhere in the garden.
While planning the rose garden it is always better to bear certain points in mind. You will have to decide which way you want your rose plant to climb, across the porch vertically or along a water tank, fence etc horizontally. If you want your roses to grow in a good height then you have to choose a variety that is good at climbing. For horizontal spreading Rambling roses are the best but however they do not climb well.
The plants that grow horizontally will flower more than the ones that grow vertically as they rely on flowering spurs which are short and grow off from the stem. Ensure that you go through the label properly so that you buy a rose that fits your needs else you will land up being frustrated and curse the rose plant that is not flowering.
Climbing roses require at least 6 to 7 hours of sunlight every day. If the plants are planted in a shady place then their growth will not happen as desired. It will take so much of time that you will land up in your garden with your grandkids before the desired growth happens. If you don’t have any options with the place then it is better that you go in for some other climbing plant.
Climbing rose bushes don’t require pruning like the other types other than that for removing dead wood and shaping. Do not encourage the growth of green long flexible canes which spur out from your plant. The flowers will be born in the subsequent years which are flexible and easy to train.
Pruning can be considered for focusing on the less or extra vigorous canes which grow from a rose plant’s base. As there is no requirement for your rose plant to focus its energy on its base.

It is better to have the final picture in mind when you buy your roses and put in certain amount of patience for couple of years though it can be a little frustrating.
